Training Unit

Caritas Jordan provides primary health care services through its clinics in all centers.

In 2017, Caritas started to work on the universal classification of diseases or what is called ACD10, in an aim to improve the level of reports’ quality. For this reason, Caritas Jordan conducted a training with the cooperation of the Ministry of Health on this subject. The training took place on 27, 28, 29, November 2017 at the training hall of the 4th circle building.
17 participants comprising social workers of the health sector, nurses and a number of workers at Caritas Jordan health unit.
Training Methodology:

The first day of the training, the term ICD10 was introduced as a basis of diseases classifications of medical terms, which were taught and disseminated to health care persons, in addition to doctors and nurses, classified the diseases and provided medical terms and were given special codes, then a training was made by asking medical questions by doctors/ trainers to the participants.
There was a dialogue about medical terms that might have more than one meaning, so reading the patient’s file is very important to know about each patient’s disease history.

In the second and third days of the training, there was a dialogue about the aim of classifying diseases, which is to store data, retrieve and explain them, by doing some individual and collective training to extract the medical codes of each disease.
Outcomes of the training:

• Participants became capable to read and explain accurately the medical codes.
• Quick procedures between social workers, nurses and doctors: Social workers acquire reading and explaining medical codes quicker and there will be no need to ask the doctor each time about diseases’ codes, unless in situations that require this.
• Issue reports and know about diseases, which people come with to Caritas clinics.

At the end of the training, certificates of participation were distributed to the trainers.

 anger management training

Anger is a fundamental feeling that everyone experiences from time to time. Therefore, anger management training sessions have been designed to help people; enable them to learn and practice methods of bringing their anger under-control, learn how to express their anger appropriately. People need to learn healthy and social respectful ways to express angry feelings and not to let anger get out of control to the point where it negatively effects relations, employability and health.

Under this theme, Caritas Jordan delivered a training which provided social and psychological skills to Caritas staff.

As part of “theoretical skills” training, the program started with an in-depth session on Caritas key values and a focus on maintaining an interactive tone throughout the sessions.

Caritas Jordan arranged 2 training sessions delivered by Professor Dr. Peter from Belgium and Child Psychiatry Specialist. This training targeted Caritas counseling unit. The two sessions were held at 4th circle training room-Amman and the topics were:

1. Trauma, trauma informed care:

Trauma-informed services take into account an understanding of trauma in all aspects of service delivery, and place priority on trauma survivors’ safety, choice and control. The sessions introduce treatment culture of non-violence, learning and collaboration.

Working in a trauma-informed way does not necessarily require disclosure of trauma. Rather, services are provided in ways that recognize needs for physical and emotional safety, as well as choice and control in decisions affecting one’s treatment.

In trauma-informed services, there are focuses on policies, practices and staff- related approaches to safety and empowerment for the service user. Safety is created in every interaction; while confrontational approaches are avoided.

Trauma-specific services more directly address the need for healing from traumatic life experiences and facilitate trauma recovery through counseling and other clinical interventions. Advocates for trauma-informed approaches in the substance use treatment field do not recommend substance use treatment professionals to treat trauma, but rather to approach their work with the understanding of how common trauma is among those served, and how it is manifested in peoples’ lives. It could be said that trauma-informed approaches are similar to harm-reduction-oriented approaches in that they focus on safety and engagement. In trauma-informed contexts, building trust and confidence pave the way for people to consider taking further steps toward healing and recovery while not experiencing further traumatization.

2. Dealing with adolescence:

How can parents deal with adolescence in crises?
Lecturers talked about biological and brain development from early childhood till 18 years old and the effectiveness of the traumatic events in crises, how can trauma affect them and what is the good intervention that they can use to solve the behavioral and emotional problems.
Dr. Peter taught the participants some means on how to include teenager in individual sessions with their parents.

Nisreen Hijazeen from down town Center said: “this training was very useful because it gave me some new means on how to deal with teenagers. Furthermore, how to deal with mental disorders.

Lana Snobar said: “this training was very excellent because it introduced me to skills on how to build trust with teenagers, especially with the refugees.

This course took place on the 7th- 8th of June 2016 in the 4th Circle training hall in Amman. The aim of this was to train our participants on how to use art therapy in education to both help the individuals suffering, and discern particular cases that had suffered from psychological and social difficulties. Through this they were also taught how to follow up these cases correctly.

Firstly, an introduction took place as to what exactly is the definition of art therapy, its uses and goals. A practical training was then given on showing what can be achieved through using this treatment and the benefits and advantages for individuals. Participants were also taught about with whom art therapy can be used for. The trainer shared with participants the common mistakes that can be found with this, to educate them fully on the topic. Further to this, they were taught in detail how to recognize certain patterns of drawing and the main elements in a particular picture which would then enable the participant with appropriate knowledge of how to deal with each one. They were also taught about the role of colors in Art therapy. Due to the nature of this exercise participants were trained on how to ask a question which would allow them to understand the content of the drawing.

As part of the training, many drawings were shown as examples to the trainees.

We interviewed a few of the participants to provide us with feedback of the training. Noor from Zarqa center told us: ‘the training was fruitful and useful in terms of identifying new concepts and signs. This gave us the means to which we could apply and recognize this in the drawings’.
